Renal scintigraphy, commonly known as a renal scan, is a specialised medical imaging procedure used to assess the structure and function of the kidneys. This non-invasive test is crucial for diagnosing various renal disorders and evaluating kidney function. It utilises small amounts of radioactive materials called radiotracers, which are injected into the bloodstream and emit gamma rays. These rays are captured using a gamma camera, allowing clinicians to visualise and assess the kidneys’ condition and functionality.

The primary advantage of renal scintigraphy over other imaging techniques is its ability to provide both structural and functional information. This makes it exceptionally useful for detecting and monitoring conditions such as renal artery stenosis, kidney stones, and other abnormalities that could impair renal function. It is also invaluable in evaluating kidney transplants and determining the differential function of each kidney, which is crucial for planning surgical interventions.

The procedure is straightforward and typically involves administering the radiotracer through a vein in the arm. Patients are then positioned under a gamma camera, which captures images of the radiotracer as it passes through the kidneys. The entire process usually takes about an hour, depending on the specific tests ordered by the physician. Images are analysed to observe the blood flow to the kidneys and to monitor the radiotracer as it moves through the renal system, providing essential insights into kidney health and function.

Renal scintigraphy is effective in diagnosing kidney diseases and plays a pivotal role in monitoring treatment progress over time. Its ability to quantify renal function dynamically is unmatched by more conventional imaging modalities like ultrasound or CT scans, which primarily provide static images. As a result, renal scintigraphy remains a cornerstone in managing patients with renal diseases, offering a detailed, functional perspective critical for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
