Radiopharmacy

Radiopharmaceuticals are increasingly central to modern diagnostic imaging and targeted therapy. These agents contain radioactive isotopes that emit detectable radiation, enabling visualisation of physiological and molecular processes. Technetium-99m remains one of the most widely used isotopes in SPECT imaging, supporting cardiac, pulmonary and oncological assessment. Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose underpins PET imaging by highlighting tissues with high glucose metabolism, transforming cancer detection and staging. Gallium-68–labelled compounds allow precise localisation of neuroendocrine tumours, while therapeutic agents such as lutetium-177–based treatments and radium-223 deliver targeted radiation to malignant tissue. Iodine-131 continues to play a key role in the management of thyroid disease. Ongoing research is expanding this field, advancing precision diagnosis and personalised treatment strategies in contemporary healthcare.
