Lacrimal scintigraphy is a medical imaging technique used to evaluate the function of the tear drainage system in the eye. It is a non-invasive procedure involving injecting a small amount of radioactive material into the eye. This material is then tracked using a special camera to create an image of the tear drainage system.
The tear drainage system comprises several structures, including the lacrimal gland, which produces tears; the lacrimal sac, which collects tears; and the nasolacrimal duct, which drains tears into the nasal cavity. A malfunction in any of these structures can result in a condition known as epiphora, characterised by excessive tearing.
Lacrimal scintigraphy is typically performed in patients who experience chronic tearing or other symptoms related to the tear drainage system. Before the procedure, the patient is instructed to refrain from using eye drops or taking medications that may affect tear production. During the procedure, a small amount of radioactive material called technetium-99m is injected into the eye.
This material is safe and does not cause any discomfort to the patient. The patient is then asked to blink several times to distribute the material throughout the tear film. A special camera is then used to take images of the eye at various intervals, typically 5, 10, and 15 minutes after injection. These images allow the physician to track the movement of the radioactive material through the tear drainage system and identify any areas of blockage or malfunction.
Lacrimal scintigraphy is a useful diagnostic tool for various conditions that affect the tear drainage system. It can identify blockages or strictures in the nasolacrimal duct, evaluate the function of the lacrimal gland, and detect abnormalities in tear flow.
One advantage of lacrimal scintigraphy is that it is a non-invasive procedure that requires no anaesthesia or sedation. It is also relatively quick, typically taking less than an hour to complete.
